Why Choose The Gibson SG ’61 Reissue Cherry?
Classic 1961-Inspired SG Design
The SG design arrived in the early 1960s as a thinner, lighter and more upper-fret-friendly evolution of Gibson’s solidbody range. The ’61 Reissue captures that early SG spirit with its sharp double-cutaway body, fast access and vintage-inspired styling.
Lightweight Mahogany Power
The mahogany body gives the SG its familiar resonance, midrange punch and lively response. Compared with a Les Paul, an SG typically feels lighter and more immediate, making it especially comfortable for long rehearsals, gigs and studio sessions.
Fast Slim-Taper Feel
The ’61 Reissue is known for a slimmer, faster neck feel that suits lead playing, expressive bends, chord work and players who prefer a more agile Gibson neck profile.
Dual Humbucker Versatility
The HH pickup layout gives this guitar a broad and powerful sound. The bridge pickup delivers bite and aggression for rock rhythm and lead work, while the neck pickup offers warmth, sustain and smooth blues tones.
Excellent Upper-Fret Access
The deeply cut SG body shape makes higher frets easy to reach. This is one of the reasons SGs are loved by lead players who want a Gibson sound without the restricted upper-fret feel of some single-cutaway guitars.
Cherry Finish Appeal
The Cherry finish is the definitive SG look. It gives the guitar the classic visual identity associated with the model and looks fantastic on stage.
Gibson Hardcase Included
The included Gibson hardcase provides proper protection for storage, transport, rehearsals and gigs.
Comparison Against Popular Alternatives
Gibson SG ’61 Reissue vs Gibson SG Standard
An SG Standard is a great all-round Gibson solidbody, often with a slightly different neck feel and visual specification depending on year. The ’61 Reissue is better suited to players who want early-1960s-inspired styling, a slim neck feel and vintage SG character.
Gibson SG ’61 Reissue vs Gibson Les Paul Standard
A Les Paul Standard offers a thicker, heavier single-cut feel with more focused sustain. The SG ’61 Reissue is lighter, more open-feeling and easier to access at the upper frets, while still giving strong Gibson humbucker tone.
Gibson SG ’61 Reissue vs Gibson SG Special
An SG Special usually has a more stripped-back specification and often a different pickup layout depending on version. The SG ’61 Reissue gives the more traditional twin-humbucker SG Standard-style experience.
Gibson SG ’61 Reissue vs Epiphone SG
An Epiphone SG offers excellent value and accessible SG styling. This Gibson SG ’61 Reissue offers USA-made build quality, stronger used-market appeal and a more premium Gibson playing experience.
Who Is It For?
Rock And Classic Rock Players
The SG is one of the defining rock guitars, with a raw, direct response that works beautifully through overdrive, distortion and valve amps.
Blues And Blues-Rock Guitarists
The neck pickup warmth, bridge pickup bite and comfortable upper-fret access make this guitar excellent for expressive blues phrasing and sustaining lead work.
Hard Rock And Punk Players
The SG’s aggressive midrange and lightweight body make it a great choice for high-energy riffs, fast rhythm playing and stage performance.
Studio Musicians
An SG records well because it offers humbucker thickness without becoming overly heavy or muddy. It can add bite, sustain and character to a mix.
Gibson Fans Wanting A Lighter Guitar
Players who love Gibson tone but want something lighter and more immediate than a Les Paul will find the SG ’61 Reissue especially appealing.

Why Choose A Gibson SG ’61 Reissue?
A Gibson SG ’61 Reissue is a brilliant choice for players who want classic Gibson tone in a lighter, faster and more immediate body shape. It keeps the essential humbucker power, set-neck feel and Gibson control layout, but adds easier upper-fret access and a more agile playing experience.
The slim double-cutaway body makes it comfortable on stage, while the dual humbuckers provide plenty of power for blues, rock, hard rock, punk and modern pedalboard-based sounds. It is a guitar that feels lively, direct and responsive under the hands.

Story & Context: Gibson SG ’61 Reissue
The SG design began life in 1961 when Gibson introduced a thinner, lighter double-cutaway solidbody with improved upper-fret access. The model would later become known as the SG, short for “solid guitar”, and went on to become one of Gibson’s most recognisable electric guitars.
The ’61 Reissue celebrates that early SG identity, focusing on the fast feel, sharp styling and powerful humbucker tone associated with the original early-1960s design. It has become a favourite for players who want a more vintage-inspired SG rather than a standard modern version.
This Cherry example, serial 02033577, is a strong pre-owned Gibson for players who want the classic SG look, a Gibson hardcase and the musical flexibility of a USA-made ’61 Reissue.
