What Makes the Nord Grand 2 Special?
The Nord Grand 2 is built around a premium Kawai keyboard mechanism designed to provide a more acoustic-piano-like connection between player and instrument. Triple sensors accurately track key movement, giving players excellent control over dynamics and repeated notes.
What separates the Grand 2 from a conventional digital piano is its performance flexibility. Two Piano layers and two Sample Synth layers can be combined, split and processed independently, giving you sophisticated stage setups without compromising the instrument's piano-focused design.
Why Choose the Nord Grand 2?
Premium Kawai Responsive Hammer Action
At the heart of the Nord Grand 2 is its 88-note Kawai Responsive Hammer Action keybed with Triple Sensors.
The advanced hammer mechanism is designed to provide a balanced and responsive feel across the keyboard, giving players precise control throughout the dynamic range. For pianists moving between acoustic instruments and a professional stage setup, this is one of the Grand 2's most important advantages.
Triple Sensor Technology
Triple sensors provide highly accurate detection of key movement, particularly when notes are repeated before the key has completely returned to its starting position.
This allows techniques such as fast repeated notes and detailed dynamic articulation to feel more natural, helping the Grand 2 respond to nuanced piano playing rather than simply triggering sounds.
Two Independent Piano Layers
The Grand 2 provides two independent Piano layers, allowing two different piano sounds to be combined simultaneously or assigned to separate sections of the keyboard.
Dedicated LED level faders give each layer immediate volume control, making it easy to balance sounds in real time without navigating through menus.
Nord Piano Library
The Piano section supports the renowned Nord Piano Library, covering acoustic grand pianos, upright pianos, electric pianos, digital and layered instruments, Clavinets, harpsichords and additional specialist keyboard sounds.
Sounds can be replaced and organised using Nord Sound Manager, allowing musicians to customise the internal piano collection around their own playing style and performance requirements.
Advanced Piano Expression
The Grand 2 includes String Resonance for acoustic grands and uprights, helping recreate the sympathetic interaction between strings found in an acoustic instrument.
Selectable Soft Release, Dynamic Compression, three keyboard-touch curves, specialised Timbre settings and Unison provide further control over the character and response of individual piano sounds.
Two Independent Sample Synth Layers
Alongside its Piano engines are two independent Sample Synth layers, dramatically expanding the range of sounds available.
Strings, orchestral instruments, pads, brass, guitars, synth textures and many other sampled sounds can be combined with the Piano sections, allowing the Grand 2 to cover sophisticated arrangements from a single keyboard.
Flexible Sample Synth Controls
The Sample Synth section provides useful sound-shaping controls including Attack, Decay/Release, Vibrato, Unison, Mono, Legato and Glide.
Soft and Bright settings provide additional tonal adjustment, making it quick to adapt sample-based sounds to sit alongside a piano or work effectively within a full band mix.
Four-Layer Performance Architecture
With two Piano and two Sample Synth layers, the Grand 2 allows up to four sounds to form part of a performance setup.
Layers can be stacked or assigned to keyboard zones, making combinations such as grand piano and strings, electric piano and pad, or more complex multi-zone arrangements easy to create.
Flexible Splits & Crossfades
The Grand 2 provides 10 selectable split points with LED indication.
Split Point Crossfades allow neighbouring zones to blend smoothly rather than changing abruptly at a single key. Small, Large and Off settings let you choose how gradually one sound transitions into another.
Dedicated Effects for Each Layer
Each Piano and Sample Synth layer benefits from dedicated effect processing, providing much more control when building complex sounds.
Available processing includes Tremolo, Pan, Wah, Ring Modulation, Phaser, Flanger, Chorus, Vibe, Spin, amplifier simulations, EQ, Compression and Delay.
Comprehensive Reverb
The Global Reverb section offers Spring, Booth, Room, Stage, Hall and Cathedral algorithms.
Pre-Delay, Chorale and Bright/Dark options provide additional control, while the reverb amount can be adjusted individually for each layer so that different sounds can occupy their own space within a performance.
Seamless Transitions
Seamless Transitions allow sustained notes to continue when changing between compatible programmes.
This is particularly valuable during professional live performance, where abrupt cut-offs between songs or sections can be distracting.
Nord Triple Pedal 2 Included
The Nord Triple Pedal 2 is supplied with the Grand 2, providing an appropriately sophisticated pedal system for a premium stage piano.
It supports traditional sustain, sostenuto and soft pedal functionality alongside Nord's advanced pedal features, including realistic Pedal Noise with compatible piano sounds.
Clear, Performance-Focused Interface
An OLED display, dedicated controls and LED level faders provide clear feedback without turning the Grand 2 into a menu-heavy workstation.
Splitting the keyboard, balancing layers, adding effects and adjusting sounds can all be handled quickly from the front panel, making the instrument particularly well suited to live performance.
Who Is It For?
The Nord Grand 2 is designed primarily for pianists who want one of Nord's most piano-focused playing experiences.
It is an excellent choice for professional performers, session musicians, theatre players, worship musicians, recording studios and serious pianists who require realistic hammer action alongside extensive live-performance functionality.
Players who spend most of their time on acoustic and electric piano sounds but occasionally need strings, pads and other layered textures should find its combination of dual Piano and Sample Synth sections particularly useful.
Story & Context
The original Nord Grand was introduced as a more piano-focused alternative within Nord's professional keyboard range, pairing Nord's sound libraries and hands-on performance controls with a premium Kawai hammer-action keyboard.
The Nord Grand 2 was introduced at NAMM 2024, taking the concept considerably further.
Its new-generation Kawai Responsive Hammer Action keybed was joined by a redesigned layer-based architecture featuring two Piano and two Sample Synth layers, LED faders and individual effects. The result retained the piano-first character of the original while significantly increasing its usefulness as a complete professional performance instrument.
Nord Grand 2 vs Nord Piano 6 88
Both instruments provide two Piano layers, two Sample Synth layers and sophisticated performance effects, but the keybed is a major point of distinction.
The Nord Grand 2 uses a Kawai Responsive Hammer Action mechanism and is specifically designed to deliver Nord's premium grand-piano-oriented playing experience. The Piano 6 88 uses Nord's Triple Sensor Grand Weighted Action and offers a more compact and lighter stage-piano format.
For players whose highest priority is the keyboard action and acoustic-piano-style playing experience, the Grand 2 is the more specialised option.
Nord Grand 2 vs Nord Stage
The Nord Grand 2 is fundamentally piano focused, pairing its Kawai hammer action with dual Piano and Sample Synth layers.
The Nord Stage provides a broader range of performance tools, including a dedicated organ engine and a substantially deeper synthesizer section. Players needing an all-purpose keyboard for piano, organ and advanced synthesis may prefer the Stage, while dedicated pianists are more likely to appreciate the Grand 2's specialised playing experience.
