Description

The Suhr Classic S HSS in Black with maple fingerboard combines familiar vintage-inspired S-style ergonomics with the precision, hardware and electronics expected from a premium modern Suhr.

Its HSS pickup configuration pairs two Suhr V60LP single-coils with an SSV bridge humbucker, giving it considerably more drive and thickness at the bridge than a traditional three-single-coil guitar while retaining clear neck and middle sounds. Suhr’s SSCII system helps reduce traditional single-coil hum without requiring a battery.

A 60’s C Vintage Standard maple neck, 9"–12" compound-radius fingerboard, stainless-steel frets, locking tuners and 2-post tremolo make this a strong option for players who want classic styling without giving up contemporary playability.

Why Choose The Suhr Classic S HSS?

HSS Versatility

The SSV bridge humbucker provides greater output and midrange weight for overdrive and lead work, while the V60LP neck and middle single-coils retain the clarity and response associated with vintage-style S guitars.

60’s C Vintage Standard Neck

Suhr’s 60’s C Vintage Standard profile measures approximately .810" at the first fret to .930" higher up the neck, giving it a comfortable vintage-inspired shape without feeling excessively bulky.

Compound-Radius Maple Fingerboard

The 9"–12" compound radius gradually becomes flatter towards the upper frets, balancing comfortable chord work lower down the neck with easier bending and lead playing higher up.

Stainless-Steel Frets

Medium stainless-steel frets provide a smooth feel for bends and vibrato while offering significantly greater wear resistance than conventional nickel-silver fretwire. Suhr specifies .055" x .090" medium stainless frets for the Classic S.

Modern Tuning Stability

Suhr locking tuners and a 2-post tremolo with steel block give the Classic S a more contemporary hardware specification than a strict vintage recreation.

Comparison Against Popular Alternatives

Suhr Classic S HSS vs Fender American Ultra Stratocaster HSS

The Fender American Ultra offers contemporary Fender features and switching, while the Suhr places greater emphasis on boutique-level construction, stainless-steel frets, SSCII noise reduction and Suhr’s own pickup system.

Suhr Classic S HSS vs Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster

A Fender Custom Shop Strat may appeal more strongly to someone prioritising Fender heritage or a historically specific recreation. The Classic S is better suited to players who want the traditional S-style concept deliberately refined for modern professional use.

Suhr Classic S HSS vs Suhr Classic S SSS

The SSS version is the better choice for someone who wants three traditional single-coil voices. The HSS model is more versatile for players who regularly move between cleaner S-style tones and heavier bridge-pickup rock sounds.

Suhr Classic S HSS vs Suhr Modern

The Modern is designed around more contemporary ergonomics and 24-fret performance, while the Classic S keeps the familiar vintage-inspired double-cut feel with 22 frets and traditional S-style control placement.

Who Is It For?

Professional And Gigging Guitarists

The combination of versatile pickups, noise reduction, locking tuners and tremolo stability makes the Classic S particularly practical for players covering several styles during a live set.

Rock And Blues-Rock Players

The SSV bridge humbucker gives the guitar enough power for driven rhythm and lead sounds without losing the dynamic response expected from a premium passive pickup.

Funk, Pop And Soul Players

The V60LP single-coils provide the brighter attack and clarity required for clean rhythm work, while the five-way arrangement keeps familiar S-style combinations immediately accessible.

Session Guitarists

HSS is one of the most useful configurations for studio work because it covers brighter single-coil textures and fuller humbucker sounds without changing instruments.

Players Moving Into Boutique-Level Guitars

For someone upgrading from a mainstream production S-style guitar, the Classic S brings together premium hardware, stainless frets, carefully developed pickups and refined neck geometry without abandoning a familiar format.

Why Choose An HSS S-Style Guitar?

An HSS guitar is ideal when traditional single-coil sounds are important but you also need a bridge pickup with more output and body. The neck and middle positions remain suited to clean rhythm, blues and funk, while the humbucker handles heavier overdrive, lead work and thicker rhythm tones more naturally than a vintage-output bridge single-coil.

The Classic S develops that familiar formula further through Suhr’s SSCII Silent Single Coil System II, which is designed to reduce 60-cycle hum from the single-coil positions without using a battery.

Story & Context: Suhr Classic S

John Suhr’s guitar-building career predates the Suhr brand by many years, including work in New York on Pensa-Suhr instruments and a period as Senior Master Builder at the Fender Custom Shop. He established his own Suhr manufacturing operation in 1997, giving him full control over instrument design and production.

The Classic family reflects Suhr’s long experience refining traditional bolt-on electric-guitar designs rather than simply reproducing them. Features such as compound-radius fingerboards, stainless-steel frets, noise-reduction electronics and locking hardware address practical issues faced by modern working guitarists.

The present Classic S evolved from the earlier Classic Pro, and Suhr specifically states that it retains several of that model’s defining features, including stainless-steel frets and the SSCII hum-cancelling system.

That makes the Classic S less a strict vintage reissue and more a carefully modernised interpretation of one of the most familiar electric-guitar formats ever created.

Fair Deal Music Verdict

★★★★★ 5/5

The Suhr Classic S HSS Maple Black is a superb all-round professional guitar. It keeps the familiar response and ergonomics that make the S-style format so useful while solving several of the compromises players often accept with a traditional vintage-spec instrument.

The SSV/V60LP HSS arrangement is particularly effective because it gives you genuine single-coil character where it matters while adding a much stronger bridge voice for rock and higher-gain work.

Best suited for: Professional players, session guitarists and musicians who need one premium electric to cover a wide range of styles.

Customers usually upgrade from: Fender Player, American Professional and similar production S-style guitars.

Most commonly paired with: Quality valve amplifiers, amp modellers, overdrive, compressor, delay, reverb and versatile pedalboards.

Our tip: Use the bridge humbucker for your heavier lead and rhythm sounds, then move to the neck and intermediate positions for cleaner work rather than trying to make one pickup cover every part of a set.

Showroom feedback: The Classic S feels immediately familiar, but the stainless frets, compound radius, locking hardware and quieter single-coil operation make it noticeably more refined than a traditional vintage-style S guitar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Suhr Classic S HSS still sound like a traditional S-style guitar?

Yes. The V60LP neck and middle pickups retain the bright, dynamic single-coil character expected from this type of instrument, while the SSV bridge humbucker adds a fuller option when required.

What does a compound-radius fingerboard feel like?

The fingerboard is more curved towards the lower frets and gradually becomes flatter higher up. This provides comfortable chord playing while reducing the tendency for notes to choke during large bends further up the neck.

Is the Suhr SSV a high-output humbucker?

It is better described as a vintage-output humbucker. Suhr characterises the SSV as dynamic and relatively uncompressed, with the bridge version wound hotter than the neck version for added sustain and midrange response.

Is SSCII an active system?

No battery is required. SSCII is Suhr’s proprietary system for reducing traditional single-coil hum while preserving the normal pickup response.

Are stainless-steel frets suitable for frequent gigging?

Yes. Their durability is one of their major advantages, particularly for players who play regularly or use lots of bending and vibrato.

Can the Classic S work with modern amp modellers?

Yes. Its passive HSS electronics are equally suitable for traditional amplifiers, analogue pedalboards, profiling systems and modern digital modelling rigs.

Can I request a closer look before purchasing?

Yes. Our Request a Video Demo option is particularly useful if you would like to see and hear this individual Pre-Owned Suhr in more detail before purchasing.
