Wham Bam Thank You Ma'am - A Look at Digitech Whammy Pedals

Whammy pedals have carved out a special place in the world of guitar effects, offering players an exciting way to bend pitch and add fresh flavour to their sound. Digitech offer some of the best whammy pedals on the market. In our recent YouTube video, Harry and Dan dive into the wonderfully weird world of whammy pedals. You get a nice demo of each product with a little explanation on what it does and how to use it.

So what exactly makes each whammy pedal unique? Well, you get a whole host of different features to play around with other than just the whammy, such as octave shifts, loops, pitch bends, and more. As always, while reviews are great for understanding a product, it's always best to test it for yourself to find something that suits your sonic needs.

However, without wanting to go into too much detail I am going to briefly touch upon what each of these pedals can do, but if you want a more in depth explanation of each of the pedals, and a cheeky demo to see what kind of sounds are possible to make, check out their video here:Whammy Madness! Testing Every DigiTech Whammy Pedal

Without further ado, let's find out why Digitech whammy pedals are so good starting with the Digitech FreqOut. This pedal works similarly to a Sustainiac pickup. The FreqOut lets you create natural-sounding feedback at any volume using advanced pitch-detection technology, perfect for controlled sustain even in quiet environments. It features seven selectable harmonic types, including sub-octave and high-order feedback, plus an adjustable onset control to dial in how quickly the effect engages to more faithfully recreate live feedback.

The Digitech Whammy V and Whammy DT are incredibly versatile pedals. They feature 10 Whammy modes, including harmony and detune settings, with the Whammy DT featuring a dedicated drop tune section that lets you shift your entire tuning down in semitone steps or up by a full octave. With true polyphonic processing, it tracks cleanly on chords and notes. Both can make your standard 6-string guitar sound much weightier, especially when combined with a good bit of fuzz, very reminiscent of a Tom Murillo or Matt Bellamy sound.

The Digitech Whammy Ricochet is very similar to the other pedals, but instead of a treadle you twist knobs to make a more compact Whammy. You can program it to have a timed rising and falling pitch to add some depth to your playing.

And finally, we have the Digitech Hammer On. The Digitech HammerOn transforms pitch-shifting with hands-free foot control—tap one switch for instant hammer-ons up or down and another for modes like Impossible alternating pitches, sequenced riffs, trills, drop/capo tuning, and harmonies. With seven modes, 27 pitch options spanning ±2 octaves, Dry+ for adding your clean tone, and true-bypass construction. It’s a powerhouse.
